After the centre of the Etruscan territory from Viterbo (thermal springs "Terme dei Papi"), go to the Lago di Vico (Lake of Vico) shore, and finally go on toward the medieval city of Caprarola. Not too far from Viterbo you can see the city of Bagnaia (magnificent Renaissance villas) and Bomarzo (park-museum of stone sculptures). Continue the trip across the lands of Etruscan settlement, passing from the city of Tuscania, Tarquinia and Cerveteri. Then keep going toward the volcanic Lake Bracciano (with the eponymus medieval town and the beautifull Odescalchi castle), and then follow the street that runs along the lake shore toward the city of Anguillara. Then cross the Natural Park of the Trea Valley (Parco Naturale Valle del Trea) and while admiring the beauty of ancient city Calcata Vecchia take the Via Flaminia to get back to the B&B.
The route "To the South"
After you leave the B&B (turn right), head towards Fiano Romano (medieval castle Ducale, 14th century), cross the Tiber valley and go towards the town of Fara Sabina (Benedectine Abbey of Farfa, the cultural centre of the Middle Ages, full of paintings, sculptures and bas-relief). Afterwards head south to Palombara Sabina, arrive to Tivoli, the Romans relaxing place, where you can admire the famous fountains of Villa D'Este, Villa Gregoriana, the Sibilla temple and the Cathedral. At 5 km toward Rome you will find the ruins of the Emperor Adriano's villa (greek theatre, baths, temples), and then at 20 km Palestrina, the ancient Romanesque city built on the ruins of a Fortuna temple. Afterwards, go toward Olevano Romano (according to the legend, the village had the most beautiful women, used as models by the artists of the last century), and then keep driving toward the city of Subiaco (the famous Benedectine monasteries of Sacro Speco and Santa Scolastica). Go back to Via Prenestina and take the road for the famous thermal city Fiuggi. In the outskirts you can find the city of Anagni, with a really beautiful Romanesque cathedral. From Alatri go toward Frosinone and visit the Casamari Abbey, the medieval village of Aquino, where San Tommaso (Saint Thomas) was born, and then Cassino with the ruins of a Roman amphitheater at the foot of the famous Montecassino Abbey. From Cassino go toward the sea and arrive to Formia, and then to Gaeta, ancient city with a 13th century cathedral and the castle, and also close to Cicerone's tomb. Here you can visit Itri, Fondi and Terracina with a beautiful Romanesque cathedral and the ruins of the Zeus' temple. Driving on toward the sea, you can visit the legendary Monte Circeo (Circeo Mountain). We also advise you to visit Priverno (interesting medieval monuments), Sezze with a cathedral, and the medieval ruins of Ninfa, Sermoneta and Velletri. You can also visit the Castelli Romani, where you can find a series of medieval villages between the two volcanic lakes of Albano and Nemi: Genzano, Nemi, Ariccia, Albano, Marino, Grottaferrata, Castel Gandolfo (summer residence of the Pope) and Frascati. The villages are full of historical monuments, and they offer magnificent landscapes of Rome and its outskirts. On the hills you can admire the villas in the Baroque and Renaissance style, abbeys and churches of different ages. This area is famous for its culinary traditions, there are many restaurants offering a taste of the best dishes of the Roman cookery and excellent local white wine.
